| Stargazing
Live in Sherwood Pines Forest - Thursday 19th January |
| The sky's
the limit when astronomers descend on Sherwood Pines Forest Park
in the New Year. The Forestry Commission has linked up with local
astronomers from the Mansfield and Sutton Astronomical Society
to stage a glittering Nightwatch event in the 3,000 acre beauty
spot, near Clipstone, as part of the BBC's Stargazing Live event.
The historic
wood is a dark oasis thanks to the absence of street lights allowing
star gazers to marvel at the beauty of the sky above. Now it will
be the launch pad for a real life Star Trek as powerful telescopes
swing into action revealing distant galaxies, mysterious nebulae,
glittering star clusters and the giant planet Jupiter –
riding high in the sky and at its best in recent years
Ranger Karina Thornton explained: "The Stargazing Live event
aims to encourage more people to experience the wonder of the
night sky. At Sherwood we enjoy a darker sky than much of the
surrounding area, making celestial objects stand out better. These
events are always incredibly popular." To
join the event you’ll need to book on 01623 822447. The
cost is £5 per person and the event gets underway at 7pm. |

The Dukeries
Singers held their first rehearsal of the new term on Wednesday
6 September and it was a huge success, with a good turnout of members
and SEVEN new singers. They were warmly welcomed and we hope that
their Choir experience will be a long and happy one. Our Choir membership
has TRIPPLED in the last year and we have over 50 singers, with
a good spread over the voice parts, but a couple of basses wouldn't
go amiss. They make such a lovely deep sound that the rest of the
choir can "sit" on. (If that is a technical term!) Our
confirmed concert engagements this term, so far, are all in December

The Flab In The Woods |
You don’t
have to spend a bundle of cash in gym fees to lose calories as woodland
rangers come up with a better way to get fighting fit. The Forestry
Commission is staging regular weekly Nordic walking sessions in
1,200 hectare (3,000 acre) Sherwood Pines Forest Park, near Clipstone,
Notts. Experts say walking with poles sheds the pounds quicker than
normal hiking, making the pastime a surefire way to get leaner.
Free buggyfit sessions for mums are also being run every Friday
at 1.30pm, while beginners wanting to put on running shoes can join
Run in England’s pilot project in the beauty spot every Thursday
at 10.15am.
Everyone one is feeling the pinch in their wallets at the moment
and these events are a low cost way of keeping fit, making friends
and exploring the forest on your doorstep. Nordic walking costs
between £2 and £5. For more details contact Hannah Darcel
on 01623 821452 or 07789942599 or email hannah.darcel@forestry.gsi.gov.uk |

Commission Press Notice - 25th January 2011 |
Bid
to Find Cause of Seasonal Dog Illness
A new website has been launched in a bid to help find out why some
dogs have fallen ill when visiting woodlands across Nottinghamshire
and Lincolnshire. The Animal Health Trust (AHT) has created an online
questionnaire for people to report incidents where their pets fell
ill or perhaps even died.
Reports of the mystery sickness – dubbed Seasonal Canine Illness
- first came to light in 2009 and more dogs fell ill in 2010.
The problem has also been reported in other parts of the country,
including East Anglia and Warwickshire, and only seems to occur
during Autumn months. Locally the Forestry Commission has joined
forces with the Environment Agency, National Trust, Notts Wildlife
Trust, Nottinghamshire County Council and Ashfield and Mansfield
District Councils to try and solve the riddle. Read

We enjoyed
singing at our first Christening Service engagement on Sunday
30 January. Our next Concert is on 10 March 2011 at 7.15pm for
the Ladies Probus Group at the Tudor Barn, Church Warsop. The
Dukeries Singers enjoy performing and are available for Weddings,
Memorial Services and Funerals, Christenings and Concerts.
We have had
good responses to our articles and now have a thirty five member
strong, mixed voice Choir, but would still welcome new voices.
There are no auditions and no necessity to read music, just a
desire to sing with a happy and friendly group. We rehearse on
Wednesday evenings at the Adult Day Centre at the Dukeries School.
Access is from the Whinney Lane entrance and car park. Rehearsal
time is 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Just turn up and give us a go, or contact
our Chairman Alan Sinclair on 01623 823271 or indeed any Choir
member.

Landscape Meetings - 8th and 22nd March |
| The
Sherwood Forest Trust is organising a ‘Local Landscapes –
Connecting Places’ public consultation on behalf of Natural
England. This will be a discussion and exploration on the issues
that directly or indirectly relate to the natural environment. Our
area, Edwinstowe and the surrounding area, is dominated by Sherwood
Forest, and as such we hope to develop the potential that the landscape
of Sherwood can ‘provide’ for its community. The term
environment can mean many things to many people, a forest, a street,
a school, a playground, a place to live, a place to work, so the
more representative our audience the better the picture we create.
We hope that
by joining in the discussions you we will all gain a better understanding
of what our environment means to us all, and how we all move into
the 21st century with the environment at the heart of our community.
The meetings will be held at: Thoresby Miners Welfare (main hall)
on: Tuesday 8th March from 7 – 8.30pm and Tuesday 22nd March
from 7 – 8.30pm For more information and to confirm your
attendance please contact Ian Major at The Sherwood Forest Trust

Mushroom
Mania Comes To Sherwood Pines - 3rd October |
| The
Forestry Commission is inviting nature fans to pull on their boots
and join a fungi workshop in Sherwood Pines Forest Park, near
Clipstone. Rangers report that the fungi season is in rude health
with plenty of varieties sprouting in the 3,000 acre Nottinghamshire
woodland. Now a special event is being staged to shed light on
the mysterious organism on Sunday 3 October from 11am
until 3.30pm led by expert, author and broadcaster Patrick
Harding.
Patrick has been studying fungi for 30 years and he’s a
man who really does know his onions! Partial to a tasty mushroom
supper, 70 different varieties have found their way into his frying
pan. But although fungi can be a gastronomic delight, most are
not edible and indeed some are downright poisonous. Patrick will
be leading a walk through Sherwood Pines before returning to the
forest classroom to tell folk how to identify fungi and recount
the colourful folklore surrounding the subject.
Ranger Lindsey Brown said: “Despite the fact that we only
really seem to notice fungi in the Autumn, they perform a vital
year round job recycling dead wood and leaves and helping some
trees draw nutrients from the soil. But correctly identifying
them can be a real headache and this novice’s workshop is
the perfect starting point to expand your knowledge.”
Booking
is required on 01623 822447 and the cost is £16 per person,
or £15 for children under 16. This event is not
suitable for youngsters under the age of 10. Refreshments will
be provided.

of the Year - Visits Edwinstowe House |
Edwinstowe
received a visit from judges of the prestigious Calor Village of
the Year competition on 1st April 2009. Edwinstowe is one of thirty-eight
villages throughout the United Kingdom to have successfully reached
this next stage. The NE Group were delighted to host the event which
was attended by over 120 people including representatives from the
local District, Parish and County Councils and members of the local
community.
Students from King Edwin Primary School, St Mary's C of E Primary
School and the Dukeries College gave presentations around the village
of Edwinstowe before the main presentation which was delivered by
Patrick Bird. The NE Group was extremely pleased to have contributed
by offering the great services and features available at Edwinstowe
House and feel that the event was something to be proud of for all
involved. Chairman
of Edwinstowe Parish Council, Cllr Pam Bird said, "The village
were very proud to have reached this stage in the competition.
Many people have worked very hard for some time on the presentation.
This was presented at Edwinstowe House, co-ordinated by The NE
Group and supported as usual by many residents. We await the results
which are scheduled for the end of April." |

Big Bike Ride - Report |
|
The BBR on Saturday 9th May was a great success, blessed with fair
weather if a little windy for parts of the course. The 120 participants
(all with personal sponsorship) were exhaused after each leg but
still smilling as were people at the 8 change over sites. The delayed
motorists en route generously put loose 'notes' and change into
the collections pots. All the event's hosts were wonderful. Special
thanks to Fire fighter Mick Allen and the Sat crew for all there
support on the day. The NPAC charity sends several lorries with
goods to support orphanages, hospitals and schools to Europe at
a cost of 3K each, and Africa 7K, so the money raised from this
event will be well used. |

Day 2009 |
| In
time honoured fashion May Day saw people of Edwinstowe village
celebrate the return of summer. Initiated
by The Sherwood Forest Trust the celebration follows on from last
year when the Starting Blocks After School Club built the “Jack”
and helped to start what is hoped to become an annual celebration.
This is the only “Jack on the Green” in Sherwood and
is symbolic of the community spirit of the village and brings
a message of environmental awareness.

Coffee Morning Report |
| On behalf
of the Royal British Legion, Edwinstowe Branch, I would like to
thank all those that put their hands in their pockets and put
money towards a very worthwhile cause on Saturday 28th March.
A coffee morning was held which raised a total of £263.50
in just two hours through various fund raising activities. Stalls
were staffed by Air cadets from the Warsop detachment whose enthusiasm
helped towards the total. I would also thank everyone who donated
items to the bric-a-brac, bottle stall and raffle. Thanks also
to the members that attended in their free time to support the
event. A cake stall was extremely well decked out by wares produced
by Mrs Christine Needham with very little left at the end of the
morning. Similar
events are planned for the future and donations would be much
appreciated.
Please note,
we meet every first Tuesday of the month at South forest Leisure
centre, Edwinstowe at 730pm. We are always looking for new members
and would welcome any persons interested in the work of the Legion
and willing to supporting this very worthwhile cause. - Thank
you - Geoff Dunn, Secretary Edwinstowe RBL
